Unlocking the Power of Social Media: A Skill Share Session with Charley Tallis, Bauer Media

Get Set Progress interns were given an inspiring look into the world of digital communication during an engaging Skill Share session led by Charley Tallis, Social Media Manager at Bauer Media Outdoor.

From the outset, Charley created an open, approachable atmosphere, encouraging questions, reflections, and honest conversations about what it really means to show up authentically on social media. Rather than delivering a one-way conversation, she invited interns into the discussion, making the fast-moving world of digital comms feel accessible and exciting.

Exploring a Career in Communications

Charley opened the session with a realistic but uplifting look at what a career in communications involves. She explained that the industry rewards creativity, curiosity, and a willingness to experiment, often reminding the group that in social media, it’s important to “start before you’re ready.”

She also shared her own journey, including how she discovered both of her social media roles through LinkedIn. Her experience highlighted LinkedIn as far more than a job-search tool: it’s a space to grow your voice, build confidence, and connect with opportunities you may never have expected.

Building a Confident Presence on LinkedIn and Instagram

Throughout the session, Charley offered practical, real-world advice on shaping a strong and authentic online presence. She guided interns through:

  • Crafting a standout LinkedIn profile
  • Showcasing skills without feeling self-conscious
  • Understanding what works – and what doesn’t – on Instagram
  • Learning to experiment without fear of “getting it wrong”

Charley emphasised the value of “consistency, not perfection” — a message that resonated strongly with interns who often feel pressure to post flawlessly.

She also demystified the ever-changing world of algorithms, explaining in clear language how platforms decide what content gets seen and how creators can adapt when things shift.

Do’s, Don’ts and Best Practice

One of the session’s highlights was Charley’s grounded approach to best practice. With so much pressure to stand out online, she reassured interns that authenticity beats overthinking every time. She shared simple, actionable advice on:

  • Making content feel human and relatable
  • Avoiding common social media pitfalls
  • Building a personal style rooted in honesty
  • Knowing whether your current habits are helping you grow

Charley’s positive, realistic approach helped interns understand that there’s no “perfect” way to use social media, only a way that feels true to who they are.

Jen Sweeney, Corporate Engagement Manager, TPT, said:
“Charley delivered a fantastic, energising Skill Share session. Her honesty, warmth, and practical advice really resonated with our interns. You could feel the room becoming more confident with every part of the session. We’re incredibly grateful to Charley for sharing her expertise so openly and inspiring our young people to find their voice online.”

Using Social Media for Career Growth

Before the Q&A, Charley explored how social platforms can help people step into new opportunities. From making professional connections to showcasing creativity, she highlighted how social media can act as a powerful tool for career growth, especially for those willing to take small, consistent steps.

She also offered an insight into her own role, where she develops content and creative strategies for Bauer Media Outdoor, giving interns a glimpse into the realities of industry life.

A Session Filled with Honesty, Encouragement and Energy

Charley’s interactive style kept interns engaged throughout, and her encouragement to be bold, curious, and authentic left a lasting impression. Her message – that growth happens when you show up with realness and consistency – empowered interns to rethink how they use social media both personally and professionally.

This Skill Share session demonstrated how expert insight, lived experience, and genuine encouragement can transform digital communications from something intimidating into something energising and full of opportunity.

Charley TallisSocial Media Manager at Bauer Media Outdoor Said:

I really loved the session with the Get Set Progress interns – their questions and outlook left me inspired!  I aimed to create a safe space where everyone could ask anything and share openly. Social media can seem like there is only space for certain types of people, but being authentic is what truly sets you apart – there’s only one you!

‘Start before you’re ready’ is such an important mindset to have – sometimes you just have to take the plunge. A huge thank you to the Thomas Pocklington Trust for giving me the chance to meet and collaborate with this brilliant team.”
