Resources for Professionals in Secondary Education

For young people who are blind or partially sighted, going to secondary school can be an exciting but daunting time. Along the way there will be challenges. But with the right support, advice, and training, these can be overcome.

We understand that as a professional working in secondary education, you may have limited experience supporting blind or partially sighted (BPS) students. So that’s why we have created useful resources and guidance, to provide you with more awareness of the needs of BPS students.

Knowing more about the impact of vision impairment will help you understand some of the difficulties young people may experience; as well as how you can support them more effectively. A good starting point is seeing what the world looks like from the perspective of a young person with vision impairment. You can find this information in our What Do We See? 2 – How the World Looks to Vision Impaired Children and Young People video. We recommend reading our Understanding vision impairment page, for further support.

Or for information about how you can support BPS students in secondary education, why not read our four steps to an inclusive education environment guide, our resource on residentials and trips, or our pages about the Curriculum Framework for Children and Young People with Vision Impairment (CFVI)?

Our secondary school offer is continuously growing, keeping up to date with the changing landscape in education. To find out more about our professional offer, contact us at: EducationPolicy@pocklington.org.uk, or to receive regular updates through our newsletters, join our mailing list!
