New Self-Assessment Framework for the Accessible Information Standard

Date posted: 17th July 2025

A new Self-Assessment Framework for the Accessible Information Standard (AIS), aimed at improving information received by blind and partially sighted people for health and social care services, has been introduced by NHS England.

Since its inception in 2016, the AIS has provided clear guidelines for NHS and adult social care providers across England to meet the communication needs of people with disabilities and sensory loss. The recent update on 30 June 2025 introduces a new requirement for NHS service providers, such as GP surgeries and hospitals, to regularly review and act upon individuals’ changing information and communication support needs.

The new Self-Assessment Framework is designed to help NHS service providers ensure they are meeting AIS requirements. Providers are now required to annually publish their performance against the framework’s measures on their websites in accessible formats, detailing actions taken to improve services.

This update is part of our ongoing commitment to remove barriers and create equal opportunities to blind and partially sighted people. We believe that everyone deserves equal access to health and social care services, and this new framework is a significant step towards achieving that goal.
