Young Voices Volunteer Role Description
Role: Young Voice
Type: Volunteering
Eligibility: Applicants must be blind or partially sighted (BPS) and aged between 13 to 16 years.
Thomas Pocklington Trust enables blind and partially sighted people of all ages to live the life they want to lead. We know that volunteering provides opportunities for young people to build confidence, discover new talents and gain skills and experiences they can take forward into the future. Through our Young Voices group, we want to help young people who are blind and partially sighted make positive change across the country.
Main aspects of the role:
- Supporting the Youth Participation Coordinator to prepare for online monthly meeting by helping to create and distribute the agenda.
- Supporting the Youth Participation Coordinator to plan, prepare and deliver two Residential Weekends per year.
- Co-facilitating meetings or facilitating small groups, ensuring that all voices are heard and included.
- Taking notes and recording agreed actions at meetings.
- Offering structured support and being point of contact to Young Voices volunteers outside of meetings if Youth Participation Coordinator is unavailable.
- Take on research for projects that the Young Voices group works on – this could be things like searching for contact details for colleges, or finding out information about local gyms in certain areas. Etc.
- Supporting the Youth Participation Coordinator with preparations for yearly Sight Loss Council Conference.
What skills, experience and qualities are required?

- You should be patient with a strong sense of integrity.
- Be passionate about making a difference with the ability to commit a maximum of 5 – 6 hours per month to this role.
- Demonstrate good listening and communication skills.
- Confident in using technology for using MS Teams or Zoom and checking emails etc., or a willingness to learn.
- Experience of safeguarding and working with people who have disabilities.

What support will you receive?
- Ongoing learning and support from the Youth Participation Coordinator. You will have a weekly check in for the first month as a trial period, which will move to monthly after this.
- Opportunities to network with volunteers from across England and TPTs Sight Loss Councils.
- Attendance at celebration events and Sight Loss Council Conference.
- We can reimburse essential travel expenses which are agreed in advance.
